Saying Goodbye to One Team and Welcoming Another

As you know the San Diego Chargers are going to leave San Diego for good! This may be a hard thing to believe for the devoted fans, but sadly it is true that they are leaving to Los Angeles in search for a bigger and better stadium. There is currently a strike for them to stay and not leave to Los Angeles because there is no need to waste over 500 million dollars. On a new stadium when they are other economic issues that should be looked at first. On the other hand there is a bright side to the absence of the Chargers in San Diego. Weather the Chargers are leaving or not, San Diego is going to be introduced to two new sports in 2016 which are Soccer and Hockey.

The name of the new professional Soccer team is going to the San Diego Sprinter Football. This is a huge deal because this is going to be San Diego’s first professional soccer team ever. This team is specifically going to focus on speed and agility. Requirements to join the team are you must be 18 or older. And have to be able to run 60 meters in 7.0 seconds. Tryouts will begin April 26, 2016.

The second sport that is going to be reintroduced to San Diego is going to be ice-hockey.

Most people might have not known know about San Diego having a hockey team in 1944. The future hockey team is going to be called the San Diego Gulls but that is currently still in debate. Some people might be wondering where they will practice. San Diego already started funding the team to build a new arena in downtown or Chula Vista, but the location is still not yet confirmed.

This still leaves the question of who will replace the football team in San Diego. If the chargers leave to Los Angeles some people say that the new San Diego NFL football team will be the Oakland Raiders. If you watch football this isn’t a good switch because the Raiders and the Chargers are ultimate rivals. Although this may complicate a lot of things for the fans and sports directors of both teams it is still undecided who will be the new NFL football team of San Diego. Some people say yes to the switches while others believe that it’s just a rumor spread by Oakland Raider fans that live in San Diego California. I believe the chargers leaving to Los Angeles is not a bad thing, but a chance of great opportunity for the players and loyal fans to expand their high sprit and love for the game.

It’s Just a Stadium

Threatening San Diego for the past few years is what the Chargers have been doing by debating on whether to stay in San Diego or leave to Los Angeles. Since the early 2000s, the Chargers have wanted a new stadium like the other NFL teams. The Chargers have been a football team since 1960 and moved to San Diego in 1961. They have been members of the West division of the American Football Conference in the NFL since 1970. The Chargers have been the only NFL team based in Southern California since the Oakland Raiders and St Louis Rams moved out of Los Angeles in 1994.

There are currently three teams wanting to move to Los Angeles. The following teams are the Oakland Raiders, the St Louis Rams, and the San Diego Chargers. In all these exchange of teams, the Oakland Raiders can become the San Diego Raiders. The San Diego Chargers stadium is currently better than the one the Raiders have, so thoughts of moving to San Diego aren’t that bad for the raiders. The Chargers are in a partnership with the Oakland Raiders to build a new stadium together in the South Bay between Long Beach and Los Angeles International airport. We can’t let go of the Chargers and take in the rival team, that just wouldn’t work out. I really don’t think that would be okay with Raiders fans or Chargers fans.

According to USA Today magazines, “In July, the city of San Diego gave the Chargers a deadline: Make a deal for a new stadium in San Diego by Friday, Sept. 11, or there won’t be enough time to put the issue on the ballot in mid-January. But that deadline will pass without a deal and that means the Chargers appear certain to apply to relocate to the Los Angeles market for 2016.” In 2016, the Chargers will most likely move to Los Angeles and from there we won’t know when San Diego will get another football team.

After 54 years of being in San Diego, I really don’t agree that the Chargers should really move out of San Diego. They are the only Southern California team and if they leave to Los Angeles, are they still going to have the title of the only Southern California football team? The team is really just looking for a better place to be rather than the old Qualcomm stadium. The city should really consider on making them a better stadium.
