Karol G’s real name is Carolina Giraldo Navarro and she was born on February 14, 1991 in Medellin, Colombia. She is the youngest child of three children.
She first posted covers of songs by artists like Alicia Keys and Lauryn Hill on Youtube in hopes of being discovered like Justin Bieber. She is a Colombian reggaeton singer and songwriter who first got her start in music by competing on Colombia’s version of the X Factor. She studied music at the University of Antioquia before moving to New York in 2014 to pursue a musical career and signed with Universal Music Latino.
Her first breakthrough hit was “Ahora Me Llama” in 2017 which was in collaboration with Bad Bunny. The video gained more than one billion views on YouTube and reach #10 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. She has since then received several awards including a Grammy, five Latin Grammy Awards and four Billboard Music Awards.
Karol G’s philanthropy has made her a well respected celebrity. On June 3, 2018, a Guatemala volcano erupted and it led to more than 200 deaths and 260 missing persons cases. Karol had been planning to perform in Guatemala on June 30, just two days after the volcano erupted she went onto social media and announced that she would donate her profits from her concert in Guatemala to help victims of the disaster. Her profits were an estimated $15,000. She started the Con Cora Foundation in 2022 in order to promote disadvantaged women’s economic, social and psychological and artist development. The Con Cora Foundation has also partnered with the She Is Foundation and has a joint goal of helping a total of one million women and girls by 2030. The She Is foundation is dedicated to empowering women and girls from Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic through education in the sciences, technology and entrepreneurship.
My favorite song from Karol G is “Provenza.” Her songs are often composed of relatable lyrics. Overall I like that she worked hard to achieve success in a male dominated industry.
