In recent years, the use of AirPods has been popularized by teenagers, and many are seen wearing them. But they have also shifted the classroom environment as many students are seen wearing them in class. While AirPods can be helpful in some ways, their presence has sparked a debate among teachers, students, and parents.
Many students at Hoover High School appreciate the ability to listen to music through AirPods at school while being in class, claiming that it helps them stay on task and are able to work better. Omran Alnsheiwati a Senior at Hoover High School says that in case of an emergency since he can’t take his phone out during class his AirPods are able to read to him any messages he receives.
“I wear my AirPods because if my mother texts me, my AirPods read to me any messages she sends me,” stated Omran.
However, the use of AirPods is not without its challenges. Teachers and staff members have expressed that AirPods can be very distracting and affect a student’s learning environment. They may also find it disrespectful as a student might be wearing their AirPods listening to music while their teacher is talking.
“Just like with phones some teachers give five minutes to students at the end of class to be able to use phones and it should be the same with Airpods,” expressed PARA educator Mr. Chris Nelson.
He also added that he has never owned a pair of AirPods and he intends to keep it like that.
Moreover, the use of AirPods cannot be overlooked as it can also create an isolation barrier. Students may isolate themselves from their classmates.
“Whenever I’m in class and I’m trying to have a conversation with my friends,” stated senior Derek Espinosa. “It feels so dead as many of them are wearing AirPods listening to music and are in their own mind, almost as if their zombies.”
In response to this issue, schools have implemented policies on wearing AirPods by making restrictions the same as they did with phones. While some teachers may be stricter than others and not allow students to wear AirPods, other teachers may just be fine with it.
AirPods might just be another topic like cell phone usage in high school and create controversy, as AirPods in school presents both challenges and opportunities. But as of now, AirPods will play a crucial role in shaping a productive and inclusive learning environment.
