My current favorite singer/rapper is Lauryn Hill because she has such a nice voice and I feel like I can relate to all of her songs because they are so deep and relatable.
As a Black young woman, it is very inspiring to see Hill because she has come so far and has so much talent that is celebrated and appreciated. She has also given Black women the credit they deserve for their talents that go, many times unrecognized.
Hill was born on May 16th, 1975, in Newark, NJ. She is 49 years old. She started her career as a teen actress when she was in a soap opera called As the World Turns. She also starred in the well known movie Sister Act 2 in 1993, and was married to Bob Marley’s grandson Rohan Marley .
She was the frontwoman of a rap group, the Fugees. Their songs “Killing me softly”, “Fu-Gee-La”, and “Ready or not” lead their album, The Score, to be nominated at the Grammy Awards for Album of the Year. This marked the second time a rap album received a nomination for the award. Hill was the first woman to debut on top of the Billboard 200 and a diamond certification by the Recording Industry Association of America for her album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which was released in 1998 still remains as one of the best selling albums of all time worldwide. Her critically acclaimed, “Doo Wop (That Thing)” was named the best single of the year by Rolling Stone. At the 41st Grammy Awards, she set the record for the most nominations in one night for a female, and became the first rapper to win Album of the Year.
Hill has influenced and inspired many artists, some being Lizzo, Drake, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Adele, and Kanye. She is credited with breaking barriers for female rappers, popularizing melodic rap, and pioneering neo soul for mainstream audiences.
