Passing periods have not changed. They have always been the same and the expectation put on students to make it within the five minutes they are given isn’t ideal.
Five minutes is not enough. This problem should be brought up and solved with the student advisory council that has been restarted this year. Students can bring this up as a concern to be mindful of. Bell schedules are decided between the administration and the school staff a year in advance.
Typically, after second period, the stairs are flooded with students and some of them walk slowly and hold back the students that want to get to class on time and this should be talked about among students to solve. Associate Principal, Mr. Joe Boertmann has suggested talking to ASB, the student advisory council, and campus student leaders to discuss why students can’t get to class. He stated that he has been to schools with bigger campuses and says getting to class has never been a problem and asked “Does everyone agree that it’s a priority? Why is being in class on time not a priority?”.
In addition, during nutrition break, because students all have to punch in their code for snacks, the long lines cause students to be late or even not get their food. This alone is another reason why passing periods need to be longer or at least the nutrition break should be longer.
Mr. Boertmann stated that the reason why the codes are used is because it’s for accounting purposes to make sure how much food is actually being used by students and it’s mainly for date and tracking purposes. So why not have more carts during this time? He says this would be another great topic to bring up to the student leadership and other students.
