Do you find yourself waiting in line for what seems like a long time just for breakfast? Believe it or not, many students come into school without having breakfast or able to even eat anything at all.
Some students wait until nutrition break to get breakfast just to find out the line is super long and will not bother to wait in such a huge line. Some students slowly punch in their codes which make other students leave without anything to eat.
“Yes, it’s super annoying,” said senior Favian Ramos. “to wait in line only to hear the bell ring and not grab anything.”
They’ve been trying to use codes for a while but since the system was not working in the past, they weren’t able to do the code policy right away.
The codes are for the FDA regulations. They make sure that students are getting the food that the district claims to give them. Since they were able to get the machines up and running this year, students must punch in their codes for breakfast. The codes also help the school and district know if you’ve received food or not.
Students argue that this code policy for breakfast is bothersome. Students rush to the cart once the bell rings. Some are already there first and let their friends cut in line. Some may be in line, but then the carts close or even end up going to their second period late. Would there be a better way to reduce this line?
“It just makes a bunch of lines and makes students late to class,” said senior Alan Ponce.
“I feel like they should add more carts or something so the lines won’t be as long,” added senior Christian Martinez.
Students also have a limit during breakfast and lunch, and once you use your code on a cart you are no longer able to get another lunch item even if you’re still hungry. Some students even go up to their friends to ask if they can get them a second item.
According to the California Department of Education, “California’s State Meal Mandate is expanded to include both a nutritiously adequate breakfast and lunch for all children each school day. Effective July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025, children are eligible for free or reduced-price meals if the household income is less than or equal to the federal guidelines.”
How is this possible if students are waiting in line?
