Is this the new era of Hoover High Baseball?
Ever since Hoover High School’s win in the 2016 CIF Championship, the school’s baseball team has been on a downward spiral. But I think promising newly hired Coach Nealy can be the one to fix the Cardinal’s sorrows.
Last year, the Hoover baseball team went 8-16 finishing 3rd in the Central League. The previous year they had just only a single game in my freshman campaign with the team, marking one of the worst years of Cardinal baseball history. Now, with an experienced coach like Cedric Nealy, he dreams big of not only winning the Central League but the San Diego Division 5 Section as well. With new coaches, philosophies, and big dreams, this new direction of the baseball program is something that I’m willing to rally behind and glady play for.
Coach Nealy has coached in places all over San Diego spanning from San Diego High to Bonita Vista High. A winning culture is not new to him and his staff as he has won a CIF Championship with the Bonita Vista Barons and has the ring to show for it. He has been a coach in the San Diego section for over four decades and it is shown within the tactics he uses and the way he analyzes the game. His coaching staff consists of pitching, hitting, infield, and outfield coaches which were nowhere to be found in the staff prior to his arrival.
“I’m tired of the way people view and look down at Hoover,” stated Coach Cedric Nealy. “We are a ball club and we’re going to make Hoover a baseball school.”
Currently, the baseball team and I are going through our winter ball season and our first impressions of the coaches. I like that he is able to incorporate what us players want for the program while also implementing what his visions are. He gives the players a platform to speak up about any concerns or ideas we may have. This new coaching staff is very much on top of things and holds everyone accountable including themselves. I feel that the new staff has made a very good first impression on the team while also being strict on the program’s new structure.
With a new sheriff in town with his new deputies, things are looking bright at the Hoover Nest. Go Cards!
