Amanda Gorman was the first national youth poet laureate of the United States in 2017. She was born on March 7, 1998 and raised in Los Angeles, California.
As a child, Gorman overcame speech impediment through poetry. She had a great amount of love and passion for literature and writing. She was influenced by great authors like Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison. Amanda attended Harvard University and graduated in 2020 with a degree in Sociology.
Her poetry focuses a lot on social justice, race, feminism, and unity. She addresses issues like inequality and oppression. Her biggest successful moment was when president joe biden selected her to read her original poem” The Hill We Climb” on January 20, 2021. She shows that age should not be a barrier to making a difference and taking a stand in important issues. She was also the youngest poet to perform at a super bowl in 2021. She wrote her first children’s book in 2021 called “Change Sings.” It gives a message of hope to young children. She also wrote a poem during the covid 19 pandemic called “ The Miracle Of Morning” which talks about the possibility of new beginnings and great future.
In her poems Gorman gives voice to women showing strength, especially to women of color. She speaks about how Black women face more unique challenges. She writes about the equal rights of women making sure they are treated fairly.
She has inspired many young poets worldwide with her words and talent. She has used her poetry as a tool for change and empowerment. She has shown true effort and has advocated for diversity and equality.
