Claudia Sheinbaum is the first woman to be elected as president in Mexico.
Claudia Sheinabaum was born on June 24, 1962 in Mexico city. Her father, Carlos Sheinbaum Yoselevitz and her mother, Annie Pardo Cemo, were both activists during Mexico’s dark periods and they both have had a major influence in her life. Growing up she was raised in a family who believed in activism and politics but also in science.
In her early years she attended UNAM in Mexico where she studied physics and got her masters and doctorate degree there. She also studied energy engineering and went to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to do research there. After her studies at UNAM, she returned to become a part of their engineering faculty. She was later the secretary of environment of Mexico City and also won a Nobel Prize for Peace. From 2015-2017 she was the mayor of Tlalpan and in 2018 she became the first woman to be elected as the mayor of Mexico City. On October 1, 2024, she became the 66th president of Mexico and the first woman to become president in Mexico.
Days after Claudia Sheinbaum took office as president, she had spoken about changes that she was ready and hoping to make. Some changes included things that would expand women’s rights and create equality. She brought up a guaranteed idea of having an equal pay for equal labor as women are paid 35 percent less than men, for every 100 pesos men earned, women would earn 65 pesos. In Mexico there is a high number of violence against women, president Sheinbaum has spoken out about this issue and about enforcing laws against this. She says that “it is time for women to take a stand.”
Many Women in Mexico have been given hope that with Claudia Sheinbaum as president, there will be peace for them at last.
