After much consideration and discussion among administration, Hoover has decided to change the start time to 7:30 AM indefinitely.
“Looking at past and current data regarding student tardiness, we find that we have not improved our first-period tradies with the late time start. So, the San Diego Unified School District and Hoover High School will be returning to a 7:30 am start time, starting the 2025-2026 school year,” said Hoover Principal Ms. Erica Barcelo-Carrillo.
However, some teachers have different opinions about this change.
“I’ve worked at Hoover when school started at 7:30 am,” expressed math teacher, Mr. Paul Nathaniel. “So l myself can say that no matter what time school starts students who are regularly tardy will continue the same habit.”
The teachers’ worries are supported by the average attendance of Hoover students which leads to the main goal to decrease the number of tardies by implementing a plan that includes starting school earlier, improved communication with student guardians, and provide support for students who struggle with punctuality.
Starting school earlier might help students who are regularly tardy get into a better routine. Having a consistent routine would allow students to get used to waking up early and come ready to school. If they have to wake up earlier, it could encourage them to rest well and on time, to be more organized in the morning.
According to the district, this plan is beneficial. The early start includes an early dismissal as well. The earlier dismissal allows students more time for homework and extracurricular activities, such as sports. This improved time management would reduce after school stress to many students.
“Starting your day at 7:30 a.m. is beneficial because you get to finish early,” said Associate Principal, Cherese Wiltshire. “I know many friends like to do activities after school. They will have time to do whatever they want after school: therefore, school should start earlier.”
