The reason why Hoover had canceled these electives is because the school board has decided they can no longer afford these three classes for the district. Culinary doesn’t fit in with any of Hoover’s academy requirements. Also with food costs going up, culinary will increase their budget and be pulled from Hoover’s school budget. There are other classes that need the money more. It is a highly favored elective, but funding will be very limited for electives, and that is why it is being cancelled. The next two cancelled electives are going to hurt the VAPA academy the most.
Piano is one of the growing electives that is highly encouraged if you plan on going into music. But sadly this would be the last year for students to take it. One of the newest courses, mariachi, was cancelled due to lack of funding to pay Mr. Tapia. It is unfortunate that this has happened but without funding, the class cannot continue.
Hoover will offer band, marching band, jazz, rock band, orchestra, and choir, so students will still have classes if they plan to pursue music. The school board has discussed that we currently have too many music-based electives. Choir Director, Mr. Mark Gonzales, will take over orchestra, meaning mariachi will no longer be a part of our 2025-2026 school year. Music Director, Mr. Adam Miller, will instruct all the other classes.
The school board has discussed that Hoovere currently has too many music-based electives. They understand that students wouldn’t appreciate this because Hoover is all about expressing themselves. Hoover’s administration wants students to understand that if too much funding goes to the music classes, it may affect their core classes or even their future.
