At Hoover, seniors have the privilege of getting either 1st or 4th period free. However, starting next year this privilege will be taken away as the administration at Hoover believes it is time for a change.
Starting next year, rather than potentially having a free period, students must choose a class to fill the empty space in their schedule. The administration has created a list of classes to fill the empty period including, another science class, a third language, or P.E. Teachers at Hoover also believe that getting rid of free periods will create a more productive environment for students. They believe that students are wasting their time during free periods and they should be taking classes that will not only strengthen their knowledge, but also benefit them in the future.
¨If anything, I think students should use that extra period early in the morning for them to work on college applications and resumes rather than waste time doing nothing,” emphasized science teacher, Mr. Isaiah Hilton.
The staff at Hoover also believes that free periods are preventing students from being fully prepared for the real world. Many students at Hoover choose a free first period to be able to sleep in and go to class a little later. However, it’s unlikely that they’ll be able to do something similar to that once they get a real job.
“I don’t believe that seniors should have free periods in their schedule, that is just not how the real world works,” stated Associate Principal Ms. Cherese Wiltshire. “We need to make a change that better equips students for when they have to be responsible employees someday.”
Overall Hoover’s Administration no longer sees the point in giving students a free period when their time could be spent more responsibly and productively, which is why the option will no longer be available to Hoover seniors in the future.
