Every year, Easter is celebrated and it is a holiday that lots of kids and adults look forward to. Although it’s celebrated globally not many people are aware of its history or its meaning.
Christians around the world celebrate this holiday as many consider it a Christianity holiday because it celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This history of it spans from over two thousand years ago. It first originated as a celebration of the spring equinox. Christians joined their ceremonies with the spring festival which gave Easter the background of resurrection day and it was celebrated every sunday but eventually changed to once a year. The history of Easter also has a connection to the Jewish religion as Jesus Christ got crucified during Passover and got resurrected three days later.
The term Easter is said to have originated from Eostre who was a Germanic goddess and a fertility goddess. Eostre’s festival was also being celebrated around Easter. Her name is linked to the name “eastre” meaning east or the spring. Another belief is that it comes from the words “east”, “dawn” and “sunrise”.
One common tradition or symbol of Easter is its eggs. Lots of people are unaware of its significance or why they are associated with easter. Going back in time, many Christians dyed eggs red to resemble the blood of Jesus Christ which later spread onto different churches. They also believed that it reassembled his resurrection. Eggs were also dyed to identify them from holy week so they would not be eaten during lent. Although Easter is mainly associated with Christianity, Easter eggs are also used for egg hunts so that children would be able to find them and enjoy something fun.
Easter is a holiday that is celebrated by Christians however that does not mean non-religious people can’t celebrate it too.
