In today’s world, a large percent of students have had to deal with body image issues. This has been a huge concern as it is something that continues to grow. Teenagers who have issues with their body image is not something small or something to take lightly because this could heavily impact their current lives or the remainder of their lives.
School should be a safe environment for many students, however not many students feel that they belong. Today’s society has created high unrealistic standards for teenagers making them feel insecure but it doesn’t only stop there, students often deal with this at school. Many get bullied for things that are not in their control and it ends up affecting the way that they see their own body.
Teachers at school do their best to prevent this from happening but it is something that is also not in their control. Sophomore Prince Robles, says he gets shamed for his body about every week. It happens so often that he has had to learn to embrace it and not care. These types of things should not happen anywhere but especially not at a school where students come to learn and create friendships.
As the usage of social media increases, many celebrities and influencers have been popping up on students’ phones more and more. These celebrities and influencers are praised for being very beautiful or as social media portrays them “perfect”. Many teenagers are going through adolescence which is a difficult point in their life and having these not so realistic beauty standards being put on them as soon as they open can heavily impact them. Numerous teens end up comparing themselves to these celebrities, but this constant comparison sometimes ends up lowering their self esteem and their mental health overall. Students should not have to feel insecure about themselves or worse have their mental health be affected.
