Transportation has been an issue for seniors who turn 18. Pronto is a company that provides the method of payment for the MTS transportation in San Diego. However, Pronto’s youth pass expires as soon as the person turns 18 which can be an issue for some seniors because it makes it hard for them to get to school without paying bus fare.
“I no longer have the ability to use the bus pass because I have to pay the bus fare now that I am 18,” expressed senior Adam Millan, who takes the bus to get to his mom’s work so that they could drive back to Tijuana.
This has become a struggle for students because some may not have the money to pay for transportation on a daily basis. The expense of living in San Diego is already high which limits the amount of money that teenagers can use to pay for bus fares to get to school. This creates a problem for seniors who are 18 years of age and can no longer use public transportation for free.
It is no surprise that seniors struggle with getting to school on time and end up arriving late. Even worse about this because it’s senior year, and attendance is important. In addition, if seniors receive too many tardies, it affects them and their ability to participate in senior activities.
“I get to school late now because I can’t pay for the bus everyday,” said senior Ciyer Waters, who struggles with using public transportation to get to school due to the fact that they have to pay every time he goes to school.
Paying for transportation to get to school is an occurring issue that affects Hoover seniors. It is unfair that seniors who are 18 and still attending high school, should have to pay now because they can no longer use the Pronto youth pass. The pronto pass should be eligible for all students no matter their age, even free for college students.
