Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell was born on December 18, 2001. She became famous at 13 when she released her song “Ocean Eyes.”
Bille Eilish writes music with her brother Finneas O’Connell and he was the one who wrote the song but thought she had the voice for it. After its release, it went viral. She has released many songs and albums after that and I have pretty much listened to almost all of them. “Call it a phase” which is what I tell myself.
I was first introduced to her music back when I was 13 years old, because my older sister listened to her and the first song she showed me was a song of Billie’s called “When the Party’s Over.” I really liked the song and I liked the way Billie’s voice sounded. Although, when I was younger I didn’t really understand what it meant. My sister showed me the music video, and it was basically Billie sitting in this entirely white room with a glass cup in the middle filled with some sort of black liquid, then later on in the video she drinks the cup and the black liquid is pouring out of her eyes and she’s wipes it all over her face etc etc. You see, for a 13 year old with no proper understanding of anything like this, because it wasn’t anything I’d seen before, its meaning went right over my head. The song was about a toxic relationship her brother had and her brother coming home one day after a party crying because of something that had happened, and her witnessing her brother’s sadness because of it.
Most of Billie’s songs have a deeper meaning, and the first ones she wrote were pretty dark songs and that’s why a lot of people don’t like her music because they think it’s depressing but that wasn’t what made me like her music. Yes, Billie’s songs were depressing but that’s because she was depressed when she was younger, but that’s beside the point. I liked her music because of the way it sounded and the way her voice sounded. Honestly, Billie’s music isn’t the only thing I like about her though. I liked her style and the way she didn’t care about anyone’s opinion.
Billie’s fashion has changed a lot over the years. She started off wearing baggy clothes or “street wear” looking clothes I guess you could call it, but what she wore wasn’t necessarily what I liked about her style, it was about how she wore what she felt comfortable in. Not caring what anyone else said or thought about her. I viewed her as a very strong person who didn’t let anyone or anything get to her which is I guess what I try to do. I liked how she knew people judged her and she knew people were always going to say something about her but she never cared. She believes that looking good all the time can distract people from self acceptance and being happy in their own skin. She says that her body is her own and can choose to do with it and accessorize it as she pleases. That’s what I like about her; her confidence and how she has no problem being herself, and that is how I aspire to be as well.
She is the second artist in Grammy history to win all four general field categories—Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, as well as Best New Artist—in 2020.
