When students are in high school, it’s a time to become more social and surround themselves with people who they can trust, therefore adding more people they enjoy hanging out with, and calling it a circle of friends.
Throughout the years of school, from elementary to high school or even college, students end up finding people who they may click with. Finding friends who they can bond with, provides support, lends a listening ear, maybe a shoulder to cry on, and a feeling of safety are just a few benefits of being able to have a circle of friends. The friends we make can also offer emotional support which helps build their trust.
“I get to be myself around my friends,” expressed sophomore Jamie Nuno. “They help calm my social anxiety.”
Jamie also stated that friends can provide different perspectives, helping individuals navigate life’s challenges and make informed decisions. She continued that friends share experiences that create lasting memories, and a strong circle of friends can promote mental and emotional well-being, reducing stress and anxiety.
However, there are downsides to having a circle of friends. For instance, peer pressure can be a significant issue, leading individuals to engage in behaviors they might not otherwise condone. Friends can also influence one’s opinions and beliefs, sometimes resulting in a loss of individuality. Some friendships may lead to toxic friendships that can negatively impact mental health, causing stress, anxiety, and feelings of inadequacy. Maintaining a circle of friends can also be time-consuming and emotionally draining, especially when relationships become unbalanced or demanding.
A circle of friends can be a 50/50 chance of happiness or toxic energy, offering both benefits and drawbacks. While it can provide emotional support, companionship, and a sense of belonging, it can also lead to peer pressure, toxic relationships, and social exclusion. Ultimately, it is important to cultivate healthy, balanced relationships that promote mutual respect, trust, and understanding. By being aware of the potential negatives and striving for positive dynamics, individuals can create a circle of friends that enriches their lives and supports their well-being.
