Many students struggle with motivation at school everyday. It is a big issue not only here at Hoover but also many other high schools around the world. Motivation can affect the way you think, your grades, self- esteem and sense of value.
Many students’ grades drop due to lack of motivation. I can say from personal experience that it can be something that truly affects students’ lives in a negative way. When I was a freshman I felt a lack of motivation in many of my classes. It led me not to care about my grades and do the minimum amount of work in class, and because of my lack of motivation, it led me to have no desire to learn or succeed academically. This happens to many students, especially in hard classes such as math and science.
Without a sense of motivation many students may feel disconnected in class and students are less likely to set goals for themselves, manage their time and put effort into their learning. I think that for many students the reason this often happens is because they don’t understand the class and the teacher doesn’t teach the material correctly. A lack of motivation can affect students’ mental and emotional health by feeling frustrated and having no confidence in themselves. When a student feels unmotivated it may lead them to not communicate with their teacher and classmates. I found myself in this situation, when I felt unmotivated it brought my communication down and I began to isolate myself.
Students can improve their lack of motivation by understanding why they are feeling this way. Whether it’s stress, lack of interest, or fear of failure. It’s important that students face this and try to improve what they are going through. Once a student is able to overcome it, they will be able to have the confidence and motivation they need to succeed academically. Hoover offers resources that may help with motivating students. It also helps to have a strong support group of friends to push you to do better.
