As teenagers begin high school, financial struggles begin to look more common within students, and these financial struggles tend to impact their overall education and wellbeing.
As prices of many things begin to go up, many teenagers find themselves getting part time jobs in order to help their parents out while also studying for upcoming tests. The constant balance ends up leading to more issues such as lack of attendance, stress and other problems. However some students are not so lucky and may not be able to get a job which can make balancing finances more difficult and stressful for students and their families. This stress can often result in lower grades and a loss of motivation in school.
Balancing a job can be stressful to teens but also the overall stress of knowing whether they’ll be able to afford something or not can take up bandwidth. The constant thinking of their financial struggles will sometimes lead to depression or anxiety not knowing what the future has planned for them. The cost of college is very high and not many students are eligible for certain scholarships because they are unable to afford it can often lead students to drop out of school and lose motivation which can impact their future career and lives.
Ultimately not knowing if you are able to afford transportation, essentials and food can create a massive fear that is constantly in your head. However, if teens feel as if they are in a place where they feel like they’re financially struggling they can often talk to their school counselor to look for resources that can help them and that are right for them.
Teenagers should never have to be put in a bad place and worry about finances but there is hope that schools can begin to offer more opportunities for them that do not have a high cost.
