When asked what movie I could watch over and over again, my answer is simple: The Devil Wears Prada. The movie stars Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep, and Stanley Tucci. This well known movie premiered in 2006 and is classified as a comedy movie. This film is available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu. If you are interested in Vogue and the fashion industry, this movie is a must watch.
The movie follows Andrea, or Andy, played by Hathaway, as she settles into New York and pursues her dream of becoming a journalist. However in order to get there she must survive as Miranda Priestly’s assistant for two years. Priestly, played by Streep, is the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, which is a thinly veiled Vogue. “A million girls would kill for that job”, is what they all tell Andy when she landed the job, however she didn’t seem to care at all about fashion.
Throughout the film Andy goes on to discover about herself and encounter many challenges. Her perseverance and determination is challenged, and she has to learn how to adapt to a new work environment while managing her personal life.
What makes this movie so enjoyable is the characters and what they all add to the film. They are all very different but they all work so well together. As someone who grew up around fashion and looked forward to seeing all of the MET Gala looks, this movie was funny, entertaining, and informative. Instead of cartoons and kid movies, I grew up watching whatever my sisters would watch. It would always be teen movies and romcoms. To this day those are my favorite movies. Out of all the movies I’ve seen, this film has always provided comfort, a movie I can recite and even use phrases from.
This film brings me back to when I was a lot younger and would wait for my sister to come home so we could watch it together. Whenever the first Monday of May rolled around, we knew it was time to watch the film and debrief about all the outfits we saw from the MET Gala. The film taught me insight to how the industry works and the work and preparation needed to put on a fashion show.
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen this film, but I don’t think there will ever be a day that I say no to watching it. If you ever need a new film to watch, I highly recommend this movie. And if it wasn’t clear enough, if you love fashion and are invested in that world, this movie will suit your interest. If you didn’t hear, they are currently filming The Devil Wears Prada 2, which will be released in May, 2026.
