What is Gender?

Jamie Muniz, Sports and Health Editor

I have always been a person with the mindset in which no one in this world should have a label. Each human being has the right to decide what they want to call themselves; others should not create a name for them. The body parts we have should not state the gender we are. Whether the person defines or does not define their sexuality, or not should not be a way for others to assume their gender.

Coming from experience, I have come to realize that many people don’t like having a label such as being gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or straight. I myself am one of those people. I don’t think anyone should hold a label because one never really knows what the future holds for us. We can describe ourselves as a certain gender now dating another person of a different gender, but in the future they might date a person of a different gender. We never know what to expect for the future and we shouldn’t make decisions for ourselves that we aren’t 100% sure of. Senior Michelle Rodriguez ’16 states her opinion that gender is, “When a person is born they’re assigned a sex. That’s sex but gender is what a person feels they truly are. You can be a male but your gender is female because that’s what you are in your mind. That’s you that’s what you want to be. Gender is something that a person self describes, it’s what they are, not what people think they are, or what doctors say they are. It’s what they are.”

Male or female that should be one’s choice to decide what they want to be. What others see us as is their choice, although they should not have the power to label one another, they take action is that. Each every individual is allowed to define themselves as a male or female without the matter of what they’re body parts are. A guy shouldn’t be considered a male because he has a penis. The same goes for a woman, she should not be considered a female because she has a vagina. Our body parts are ours, we have them yes, and we are born with them without choosing whether or not we want those parts. We should at least be able to choose what gender we want to be known as.
