Four by Four or Six Classes?

Although Hoover High School students have a voice, and say, in the majority of all circumstances taking place on our campus, there is a major controversy regarding if we should remain on a four by four schedule another year or return to a regular six class schedule. As we all know, each year teachers vote whether or not to keep the current schedule or change it. Whichever choice receives the most votes is what our next school year shall be. We may ask ourselves, when are students allowed to cast their votes? This debatable discussion is strictly only determined among staff members yet is all done in our best interest.

Let’s take a look into why a teacher may or may not prefer a four by four schedule over a six class schedule. After interviewing English teacher Ms. Valerie Woodfil, she confessed that she’s a firm supporter of the four by four stating, “I just feel I cover much more in a 90 minute block and I feel more engaged with my students. My focus is on three classes instead of five.”

On the other hand, other staff members such as world history teacher Ms. Vicky Banks stated, “It’s not that I don’t like the four by four, it’s just that I don’t like having my students half the semester. They do best having a long term relationship with their teacher and when the pace is slower it gives them a better opportunity to learn all the material.”

Hoover High School student opinions vary: Senior Jaime Ramirez feels differently. He stated, “It’s for our own good because we get more credits, fewer classes meaning less homework. The day seems to go by faster, it’s just easier.” Junior Fernando Saucedo stated, “It offers us more classes and less work because we only have 4 classes by quarters.” Sophomore Allison Hermosa stated to prefer the four by four schedule over the six classes. “We finish two extra classes meaning faster progress and the year goes by quicker.” As a freshman Nicole Ramirez stated that she prefers the six classes over the four by four, “Classes are shorter, having four classes a day makes them longer and boring. Kids want fast classes.” Jv center back soccer player Jose Alvarado stated, “I learn more because of the time and teachers help me, I can get my work done with the extra time. I’m able to get my homework done in class so it doesn’t interfere with my practice and games.”

If you truly are passionate regarding your position, I suggest you take a stand in a moderate and sophisticated manner. This shall allow your voice to be heard yet being mindful and respectful of staff and administration of our school. If you have a group of friends that feel just as strong as you do,  form an alliance and organize yourselves to truly know what you all choose as well as what could be a happy medium that benefits all. After making this choice get your parents involved, they can be a powerful tool for your cause.
