Celebrating National Pi Day (Video!)

Whenever we think of Pi day, pictures of all different kinds of pies pop into our minds and make our mouth water. However in this case, I am actually talking about the mathematical symbol Pi, which stands for 3.141592653. This number is never ending, and math nerds have declared March 14 of every year National Pi Day. Last year, the holiday corresponded exactly to March 14, 2015 at 9:26:53 AM, matching the Pi numbers with the specific time and date. It is every year on March 14 where people use this day as an excuse to eat pie!

The yearbook staff at Hoover High sells pie on March 14 every year, either with a scoop of ice cream on top or a simple slice of pie. We always sell Apple pie with a side of whip cream and vanilla ice cream. The Yearbook crew also hosts the Pie Eating Contest where a diverse group of teachers, from different subject areas, compete against one another to see who can eat pie the fastest. However, the twist is the teachers cannot use their hands, so they have to use just their mouths with their face all in their plates to finish their dessert first. This year, the contenders in the competition were Mr. Heu, Ms. Fagent, Mrs. Munoz, Mr. Delon, Mr. Coman, Mr. Wetzel, and Mr. Gonzales. The former champ, Mr. Delon, took a sad loss to our new champion, Mr. Wetzel.

The “Pi” eating contest was a blast, there was pie splattered everywhere and bets were placed on who was going to win. With committed teachers who want to participate every year in this competition, makes the game twice as fun because the stakes are raised from the previous year. Some people thought Mr. Delon was going to continue to be the reigning champ, but Mr. Wetzel showed everyone otherwise.
