The Influence of Dr. Seuss

Brenda Thach, Staff Writer

When you were younger you probably read a book about a cat with a hat or about green eggs and ham. In fact, many of us have read one of these books in our lifetime and are familiar with the famous author, Dr. Seuss. Theodor Seuss Geisel also known as Dr. Seuss was the famous author of many children’s books that has influenced millions of children across the world.

His creative use of wordplay with the combination of playfulness is what made his books popular in the first place, and they are still popular today. His books not only appeal to the younger generations but also to the older generations, as we have grown up reading his books in elementary school and have seen multiple movies based off his books.

“The Lorax” and “Horton Hears a Who!” both teach very valuable life lessons, as do many of his books. In “The Lorax”, Dr. Seuss teaches you the importance of taking care of their environment and that in nature; every action calls forth a reaction. In “Horton Hears a Who!” he teaches his readers that size doesn’t matter. No matter how small or big you are, your life has purpose meaning don’t think because you’re not a certain size you can’t do things. As children, you don’t really see the true meanings in his books as you read his books for the enjoyment of rhyming words. However as adults, you’re able to finally grasp the concept of what Dr. Seuss has been trying to tell you all this time.

Publishing and writing over 60 books within his lifetime, Dr. Seuss has left behind a positive impact on our educational society. The National Education Association created a day marked on March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss, to celebrate and bring awareness to reading. This day is known as Read Across America, involves children from every elementary in every city across the nation to participate in reading. Dr. Seuss’s books will remain timeless and his influence will forever be ongoing. His books helped us to unlock our imaginations when were younger and taught us valuable lessons when we grew older. He has given us multiple perspectives on issues we face every day, while making it enjoyable to learn about. His imaginative storylines, eye-catching characters, and bright burst of colors in his books add a fun factor to learning. Dr. Seuss influence on us is greater than some of us realize.
