Giving from the heart

The Cardinal staff asked random students and teachers on campus to choose one of the following prompts:

Explain what you give to the world in order to create change and make the world a better place.

Explain the one thing (or several things) you need that is/are non-materialistic and why.

“To me, the non-materialistic things that are important to me are my friends and family. They’re always there for me even when I don’t want or need them to be. They’re something you can’t lose easily and they’re not something you could buy either. It’s their true love that is what I appreciate the most.”

Nancy Benitez, ‘19

“I would give poor countries money to build better houses and schools. I also would give them food and many other materials they need for themselves. Some things I need are family, friends, and love. The reason why is because without all that I would be a loner.”

George Bacilio-Gonzalez ‘17

“The one thing that I need that is not materialistic is my family because they are always there for me and I can always count on them to help me with whatever I need. They support me in everything I do and the same way they have my back, I have theirs. I don’t know what I would do without the constant support and laughter.”

-Mustafa Ali ‘19

“Something I’ll give away to make the world a better place is to donates clothes and food, to help everyone to have a warm and happy Christmas. A lot of people need clothes and food during Christmas so I think we should give out that stuff to make this world better.”

Son Tran ‘18

“What I would do to make the world a better place is to spread positive vibes instead of spreading hate. A lot of the world is currently spreading hate and it isn’t good at all. I’d rather spread the good stuff and stop the bad stuff from going around to other people.”

– Marco Calderon ‘19

“Something that would make the world a better place is end the world hunger. I can’t stand when I turn on the television and see people who starve. Honestly I want positive vibes for each and every one because everyone deserves to be happy”.

– Delonte Whitley ‘20

“When dealing with Christmas is more about spiritual preparation, meaning we need to prepared internally for the birth of our savior which is the reason we have Christmas. So for myself I would like to have the skill to be prepared for our savior. I’m also thinking the society needs to be prepared for our jolly holiday.”

~Ms. Gapuz

“The one thing I need for Christmas is somebody to talk to because sometimes I feel lonely and it will affect me by knowing I finally know someone will be there for me”

“What I would give to the world to make it a better place, it’s funny that you ask this question because after the recent election my wife and I decided to donate at least an hour of our time for some cause of our interest. She’s going to do an environmental cause or she may work with adopted children. I am going to try and start up a club here on campus, named “the Safety pin club”; it’s a movement where people wear safety pins to show that they are person of safety, person that can provide a safe haven for someone else whom is in trouble. I think that would be good to have on campus regarding the fear of immigration, profiling, and the recent elections. “

~ Mr. Hernandez

“I would give the world equality because I feel like not a lot of people are treated equally due to racism. –

Ebony Bowen, ‘19

“A non-materialistic thing that I say I would need is my family because the idea of having a family, having people that support you and love you is kind of a crucial thing to have. It can change you as a person, as a whole, how you affect people in your community. The whole world is basically a family; we’re all brothers and sisters, so I guess it’s a really important thing that we all stick together. –

Jasmine Stefanos, ‘19

“Friendship is all I need because it’s non-materialistic and they help you go through the challenges in life”. It’s nice to share the times with them, having fun and sharing experiences together. Being alone isn’t always nice but when you have friends, you can have somebody to lean on. Having friends that you can fall back on and support each other. It’s a blessing with them.

~ Ms. Savino

Sophomore Xochilt Sanchez said that the thing that she would give was kindness to change the world into a better place because she saw that being kind and helping everyone out was something she wanted to give because there are not enough people in the world who are kind and she would love to help people out because she just sees that the world needs more people like that.

Sophomore Alejandro Macias would give if he could it would be to create shelter were homeless people can come eat and sleep for the holidays. It would make the world a better place because homeless people won’t be outside freezing but most importantly is that they won’t be alone on the holidays and will get to enjoy it like the rest of us.

“Make sure I can only have responsibility towards myself, change starts with me and my inner self. If I can only make peace with myself then I can share that with others and that in itself will make the world a better place. So with that said I wish peace and happiness to you and yours.”

Dr. Eason

“I would give peace to the world because in my opinion that’s all we need right now with all the protests that are going on and all the wars that we are currently fighting. The world that we are currently living in is such a disaster due to the amount of ignorant people in today’s society. Aside from that I would want women to be treated with respect and to have the rights that men have. This would be very necessary in my opinion because women have the potential to do just as good as an even better than men in some aspects and jobs. No one should be made feel less important because of gender there is no such thing as superior sex.”

Itzel Gutierrez ‘18

“I would give happiness to the world because I know nowadays you can’t really find that. The world is kind of mess up and cynical, you can say. Everyone is killing a lot of people and it is not necessary. Happiness will be the key so everyone can chill and relax and enjoy themselves on this earth. Something I need that is non-materialistic is happiness. If you don’t have happiness then what is the whole point of living.”

Martin – CAC Advisor

“Something non-materialistic I need is friendship because you need someone there to guide you and give ideas on what to do and what not to do. Friendship can be the best thing that you can have so you won’t be alone.”

~ Natasha Banchik

Freshmen Kimberly Bueno would give to the world in need money, shelters, donating food, helping the people in hospitals like kids that have cancer or a deadly disease. They need someone to cheer them up. I would also help the community by picking up trash. What I need is a family that can understand me in certain situations and a dog because they will listen to you when you are down and will always be there for you. This will affect me because it will make me feel better whenever I am sad.

Freshmen Mireya Echeverria said that she would give shelter and plenty of food to those who need it most in their lives. For example the homeless, the hungry, those who are struggling financially and etc. she also said she would help contribute to making the world a better place by recycling and not throwing trash on the floor like some people do these days. And if possible she said she would try to help prevent wars from ever happening and have peace.

“To make the world a better place, I would give everyone a restart on society to give them a chance to clear their minds and a chance at a new personality and provide happiness to others by being happy. I would give them this so that it would end most suffrage between communities and the enemies around us.”
