Over the course of mid-May, Hoover held the annual City Heights Cluster Concerts. These concerts occur yearly so that the upcoming freshman, along with other elementary and junior high students that choose to come to Hoover join the music department. Despite having some successful shows, some great news emerged from these concerts. It was announced to the Advanced Orchestra musicians that Hoover students had the ability of taking the orchestra classes 1-8 next school year.
Music Director Mr. Joel Ginsberg, said that he will conduct these courses which will now be heavily focused on technical skills, rather than just getting through music. Details haven’t been described yet, but the friendly and knowledgeable string musicians will ensure that each student is well prepared enough for the concerts that will occur throughout the year.
The classes will correspond with the grade levels, starting with the 1-2 class for freshman, and an additional advanced group that will represent Hoover at different events throughout San Diego. It was also reported that final paperwork was being filed with the district and the school administration because there has been a great interest in the returning class, which ultimately encourages the possibility of the availability of orchestra. Mr. Ginsberg has been contacting the district immediately and is awaiting for the many stages of approval.
There are certain aspects of next year’s school year that add some concern for the music department. For example, the uncertainty of which teachers shall remain at this school and the suspected budget cuts for the upcoming school year may cause for these classes to become an unavailable visual art class. However, an interesting point to this uncertainty is that the whole process is running smoothly, and appearing to become an actual class for those wanting to be in orchestra. Through the eyes of the advanced musicians, Hoover’s orchestra department will soon contain students with a highly-motivated and phenomenal mission to create a great musical family.
