Free Periods For All

Karyme Valle Guzman, Staff Writer

Free periods, a topic many students like to discuss, especially how they should be able to request a free period and have it with no problem. While some enjoy the idea of being able to come to school during second or leaving during fourth period, others don’t really agree upon the idea. Some schools do have free periods and are able to provide the students with what they request, but at Hoover High School, even if you have finished all your credits, it is mandatory for you to go to school and go to your classes.

While discussing this topic with fellow seniors, I have concluded that students who believe we should have free periods are those that want to have a requirement system for it. This system would be like having a 3.0 or higher, not being tardy etc. The system would be able to prove you’re responsible and can handle having a free period. Although this is a complex idea, it would be helpful since not only would the staff be letting the studens who have completed their credits have a free period but also be able to get students into classrooms that they need. Maybe this idea is risky and may need more maintenance to make it a great system for the staff and the students. With every subject there is always a second perspective to this.

On the other hand, the other percentage of students believe that free periods are only a way of destruction for you.  Although free periods seem like a great idea, these students explained how free periods can look bad on your transcript. As many know, colleges like to see a student who tries their best and exceeds the limit. Even if you did pass all your classes and have all your credits, colleges would see how you took extra to prepare for the next step. These students believe that colleges will look at their transcripts and think that if a student has a free period then it means, that the students didn’t want to focus on their studies and would rather leave early instead of excelling in their education and taking extra classes.

As you can see both parties have an excellent perspective on the topic. This subject can easily be debated. I believe that students should take advantage of the opportunities they have in high school such as Hoover’s ceramics or culinary classes. Schools have additional classes that can help you develop new skills, instead of having a free period. We should be focusing on improving ourselves to have a better future.
