Martin Luther King Jr was born on January 15,1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was an American baptist minister and activist who became the most noticeable spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights movement in the 1950’s-1960’s. He is mostly known for his advancements in the civil rights using strategies of nonviolence and civil disobedience based on Christian Beliefs and inspired by the nonviolent activism of Gandhi. King’s vision had a major impact around the world and in American society. He pictured a society in which race or color was not an issue in how people were treated or decided to live their lives.

In 1955, King became deeply involved in the Montgomery, Alabama boycott of the city buses, where the company insisted that African Americans can only ride in the back seats of the bus. King’s support for the boycott caught many people’s attention and rallied many supporters, even outside of the Montgomery area, which eventually put pressure to the bus companies all over the south to examine their rules and change them. King also became famous because of his famous 17 minute long speech, “I Have a Dream” which he delivered on August 28,1963 in Washington, DC when civil rights marchers gathered around the Lincoln Memorial.
