The World Cup is right around the corner and many fans are disappointed to see that their nation will not be represented on the big stage. Many big nations did not qualify for the World Cup, such as the United States, Italy, Netherlands and Chile. The United States failed to accumulate the sufficient amount of points to qualify.

Out of the ten matches played, the U.S. won three matches, tied three and lost four. The twelve points placed them fifth in a group of six teams. The last time U.S. did not make it to the World Cup was 32 years ago when Mexico hosted the tournament in 1986. The United States had the quality and depth to qualify but, unfortunately, were not able to gather enough wins. This is a huge upset to not only their fans but soccer fanatics around the world.

However, with the likes of young prospects such as Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, Weston Mkennie and Cameron Carter-Vickers, the United States still has hope for the future. Especially with 19 year old Pulisic, who already plays for one of the top teams in Europe: Borussia Dortmund. Pulisic has already attracted interest from big clubs like Liverpool and Real Madrid. He is the United States’ most exciting player after Landon Donovan. Many say that Pulisic will evolve into a better player than Landon Donovan. Donovan scored 57 goals in 157 for the United States until he retired from international soccer in 2014.

Everyone was surprised to find out that U.S. did not make the World Cup because they are usual attendees. This has caused changes within the organization, forcing them to reflect on United State’s soccer style and possible change of recruitment techniques. Hopefully, next year will be better.
