Job opportunities for Hoover students

Angela Galan, Staff Writer

Mr. Gernesto Rivera from the County Office of Education came by with three employers from the San Diego Zoo to offer Hoover students the opportunity to apply for summer jobs. The San Diego Zoo is getting ready to hire over 200 plus positions for this summer and most of those positions are filled by high school students.

“The great thing about these job fairs is that the employers understand if you don’t have any prior work experience and still want to employ you,” Rivera explained to the students about the interviews.

“I find it really cool that Hoover had this job fair since it’s hard to find a job without experience,” said junior Barbara Hewett. ” And if Hoover had more, I would definitely go.”

Hoover students over the age of 16 came to fill out applications and receive an interview on the spot for jobs in food service and merchandise sales.  While some students were filling out their applications, others were being called into a separate room to be interviewed in groups of six.

“I’ve been looking for a job for awhile and to have this opportunity is important,” added Junior Fabiola Recinos.  “Since I’ve been trying to get a job to financial support myself.”

Students were interviewed in two sections: the first section asked the basic questions about yourself, any experience and availability, and the Second part where the scenario-based questions were they looked on how you have handled the problem in a similar experience.

I also spoke to Principal Babineau on how he felt that over 100 student showed up to the job fair and many of them were getting employed. “ It brings me joy because people all around the world go to the San Diego Zoo and I want them to see how great Hoover students are,” expressed Principal Babineau on how he felt that over 100 student showed up to the job fair and many of them were getting employed.

This job fair was so successful that Hoover students can look out for more job fairs in the future.
