The Cardinal celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Salma Hayak

Martha Nunez, Staff Writer

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Cardinal will spotlight a prominent person who has contributed to society.

Salma Hayek, a gorgeous influential Mexican American actress, director, producer, who’s looked upon by many fans and leaders around the world.  Hayek, 51, is an advocate for increasing awareness on violence against women and discrimination against immigrants. Not only has she earned worldwide recognition for her entertainment career, but she has also testified before the U.S Senate Committee supporting the reauthoring of the Violence Against Women Act and is a broad member of V-day, a charity aimed at ending violence against women and girls. In addition, Salma started the Salma Hayek Foundation in efforts to be a voice for women’s rights, various children’s health and related issues. Adding on, another movement she is at the forefront is to have more female writers and directors since males have dominated the entertainment industry.  In addition, change may take years, she also wants to get involved in the gender gap issue in regards to equal pay and looks for more people to be aggressive with the topic, and to fight for what the females want. Being an activist, advocate, and one of the greatest female Mexican American actors, she stands for what is right and is a proud feminist to fight for what women have missed opportunities on.
