Breast Cancer Awareness month is supported every year from October 1st through October 31st in order to show support for people with breast cancer. The pink ribbons are worn to honor the survivors and to support the defeat of breast cancer.

As many of you may know, breast cancer starts in the breast area with cancer cells that grow rapidly and are very hard to control, which can usually form a tumor that feels like lumps. It’s very important for women to understand that not every lump formed on the breast is cancerous, but if a lump is felt, it should be checked by a doctor.

Breast cancer can start anywhere around your chest area, and there’s also different types. According to Cancer.org, “most breast cancer begins in the ducts that carry milk to the nipple (ductal cancers), some start in the glands that make breast milk (lobular cancers).” This cancer will not only stay in one place it can possibly spread to different areas of your chest.

A local organization, Susan G. Koman San Diego, promotes Breast Cancer Awareness Month and its mission is to “Save lives by meeting the most critical needs in San Diego County and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer.”  Each year they hold the Race for the Cure marathon to help raise awareness and money in order to help women with health services.  This would also explain why during the month of October, San Diego and other cities around the country are covered in pink.

Having breast cancer doesn’t make you any different than any woman, just know that there are women who stand together and support one another. For the month of October, wear a pink ribbon or pink gear to show your support toward Breast Cancer Awareness month!
