A non-traditional Halloween

A non-traditional Halloween

Shanti Huerta, Staff Writer

This upcoming Saturday, October 31st, will be Halloween but it will look so much different because of the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic.

For millions of Americans, it’s a tradition every year on Halloween to put on costumes, go trick or treating, give out candies, and decorate their houses. It has become a part of America’s culture and a day many people look forward to. However this year it will be different due to many of the rules and restrictions we have to follow in order to not create a further spread of Coronavirus,

This year the Halloween Costume Association has created a website called halloween2020.org where you can hover over a county and display the current covid-19 level in the area. Then depending on the color code, it tells you the things you are able to do with the right restrictions. For example, when hovering over San Diego we are in level yellow and that means we should do things such as drive-thru trick or treating.

The CDC has created rules and restrictions you must follow, however, if your state has created more specific rules these don’t replace them, they just supplement them. Some of the rules we are to follow this year during Halloween if doing some type of tricking treating are avoiding contact, washing hands when handling treats, and wearing masks. It also suggests that you could do other things like carve pumpkins, hold a Halloween treat hunt in your house, hold a costume contest, or host an outdoor or indoor Halloween movie night.

Even though this Halloween won’t be the same and we aren’t certain what it will be like, there are still things you can do. This year in Del Mar, they are holding the Drive-thru Scream Zone which has apparently been a hit. Legoland and SeaWorld will be holding small party time ticketed events on the weekends until the end of the month. Petco Park has planned a Halloween Trail and spooky screenings on Thursdays and Sundays until November 1 and the Birch Aquarium is holding its annual haunted aquarium event with changes such as socially distant outdoor activities for ages two to ten. Also, the Social Justice Academy is hosting a trunk or treating event this Saturday in the front parking lit at Hoover High School from 5 – 7 pm.

Remember during this Halloween to always follow the safety measures and have fun. Happy Halloween!
