A sad day in United States history

As many of you may know,  a riot at the nation’s Capitol was carried out by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021. This riot left everyone with mixed emotions, as well as our president-elect Joe Biden. He responded to the riot that he was not happy at all and compared this to the Black Lives Matter protests. Many people agree that if this situation was carried by people of color it would’ve been taken in a more violent way.

“President-elect Joe Biden said Thursday that he believed Black Lives Matter protesters would have been met with a much hasher police response than the mob of Trump supporters who rioted and looted inside the US Capitol on Wednesday. Biden said his granddaughter had sent him a picture as rioters swept through the Capital of armed security lining the Lincoln Memorial during an earlier Black Lives Matter protest.”  BuzzFeed

This incident has shown America in its worst situation.  It is sad that so many Americans still support someone who has not had the nation in the best interest.  It shows that even in the most modern of times, there is racism still underneath the facade of “land of the free.”  The incident would be handled with extreme force if it was a Black Lives Matter protest.  Consider how many people would’ve been shot and hurt or killed?

“Biden said the rioting, in which protesters smashed windows and rummaged through Senate desks, didn’t reflect the true America. Rioters swarmed the Capitol, storming the House and Senate chambers on the second floor of the building, shouting and waving flags. At least one entered the Senate chamber and shouted from the dais, ‘Trump won the election!’ People were claiming that this was all Trump’s fault since he encouraged it and didn’t show up on television to directly talk about this situation.”  USAToday

And then adding to this conflict, Trump tweeted a video (which has since been deleted) after Biden’s speech, telling protesters they should “go home.”  As if saying this ignores the fact that he said this,

“And after this, we’re going to walk down and I’ll be there with you. We’re going to walk down — (APPLAUSE) — we’re going to walk down. Anyone you want, but I think right here, we’re going to walk down to the Capitol — (APPLAUSE) — and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women, and we’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them. (LAUGHTER) Because you’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength and you have to be strong…But I said something is wrong here, something is really wrong, can’t have happened, and we fight. We fight like hell, and if you don’t fight like hell you’re not going to have a country anymore…So we are going to walk down Pennsylvania Avenue — I love Pennsylvania Avenue — and we are going to the Capitol. And we are going to try and give — the Democrats are hopeless, they are never voting for anything, not even one vote — but we are going to try to give our Republicans — the weak ones because the strong ones don’t need any of our help — going to try and give them the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country. So let’s walk down Pennsylvania Avenue.”  transcript of former President Trump’s speech as recorded by The Washington Post.
