Which Sport Gets The Most Funding?
January 15, 2016
Hoover is big on sports and an issue that some sports complain about is distribution of funds. I believe everyone can see and agree that football gets the most funding out of all the sports. This is a most outrageous and unfair act!
Personally, I play for volleyball and I use to play for softball; any equipment or sports clothing I wanted, the money came out of my pocket. After the Varsity Football Team made it to finals in 2015, everyone applauded and recognized Hoover more, they even received their own personalized jackets from the principal, Joe Austin. I’m proud of the football team and where their hard work and success got them so far, but the Varsity Girls Soccer made finals and the Varsity Girls Volleyball made it to semi-finals that same year as the football team but didn’t receive anything or much recognition. I agree that football is a well known sport but that shouldn’t mean they deserve all the equipment needed to them while other sports are forced to buy their own.
I recently went to our Athletic Director, Kelly Granfield about this issues, and she stated, “Football, I believe, has the most funding out of all the sports because it matters by the amount of players and amount of equipment needed, as you can see, the football team is large so it is necessary for them.”
I understand each sport is reliable on their safety so each player must personally sign a contract, the physical forms, in order to play a sport. Football is a contact sport and they must need all the supplies they needed to be protected but any other sport causes a risk of injury too so it’s unfair that most of the funding is just handed to them.
Playing in sports, we rely on money for the team by fundraising or sponsors. The money we receive for doing so is towards that one sport but I think we should split it evenly to all sports. Some may complain that all their hard work to get the money should be just for the sport they play for but if all sports have a budget then why would it matter to share to others sports? If there’s a limit to our budget, I would assume football receives a lot of funds each year, probably even max out their budget so instead of wasting the money that can’t be used, each sport can split it evenly.
I love every sport, I watch every sport, and I believe every sport has a chance to be big. Every sport should receive the amount of love, recognition, and funding equally no matter the amount of players or equipment that each sport needs. The money can go a long way, there would be no more complaining and more happy teams. I love receiving new equipment for volleyball and I get a huge smile on my face, so we should spread that happiness. Football is a great sport but it shouldn’t just be all about them.
