Harvey Milk was the first political gay man to be elected to public office. He was born on May 22, 1930 in New York City and died from an assassination on November 27, 1978 in San Franscisco. When he was a kid, he would get bullied by other kids for having big ears, nose, and feet and this tended to get the attention of him as a class clown. While in school, he developed a passion for opera and played football. Before he graduated from high school, under the Bay Shore High School yearbook, his quote was “Glimpy Milk-and they say WOMEN are never at a loss for words.” Later from 1947 – 1951, he attended New York State College for Teachers and majored in mathematics. He even wrote for the college newspaper. After graduating, he joined the Navy during the Korean War and later changed to politics in the 1960s. Despite his short career in politics, Milk became an icon in San Francisco and became a maytr in the gay community. On November 27, 1978, Harvey Milk was assassinated by Dan White. Many days after his assassination, two memorials were held for him and his body is buried at Holy Cross cemetry in Colma.
