Addicting Apps #1: Neko Atsume
January 26, 2016
What kind of game has a ridiculously catchy tune, a simple art style, and very cute cats? Neko Atsume has exactly that. Neko means cat and Atsume means collector in Japanese. Neko Atsume is a cat collecting game developed by Hit-Point for IOS and Android, which was released on October 20, 2014. The app may not have much to offer, but it is such an addictive and cute game. From having a struggle to collect rare cats, to tweeting about how ticked off you are about Tubbs eating all the food. Gameplay revolves around the player purchasing food, toys, and furniture to attract a variety of cats to the player’s garden. The player can watch cats in the garden, take photos of them which can be saved in an album, and receive gifts from them.
There are currently 32 common cats and 17 rare cats, 49 cats total. Each cat has a unique name, personality and appearance. You can rename the cats after you encounter it. Many of the rare cats in the English version of the game are named after famous people both fictional and nonfictional, some cat’s name are offend puns like Mr. Meowgi.(Mr. Miyagi, a cartoon character) The difference between rare cats and common cats is that rare cats only appear when certain furniture is placed in the player’s garden. Plus rare cats have unique interactions with their respective items. Most rare cats are harder to collect than others.
This game is well known for its ridiculously catchy tune. Whenever played you would just want to wiggle to the song. Meeting new friends can also be something you can get out of this game. A player can’t physically enter another player’s garden through the game, but haven’t you ever had that moment where you forget that your volume is at its max and you’re in a public area, and you would decide to look at your cats but then the ridiculously catchy tune comes on and everyone looks at you. Which would cause you to “blush” out of embarrassment and rush to lower your volume, and then a stranger that was in the area would gasp and ask, “Wow you play that game too?” That sir is the birth of a new friendship. In my personal experience I would’ve had left the volume on and would have still made a new friend. From San Marcos to Poway and to San Diego this game is everywhere and everyone is addicted to it.
