In honor of Black History Month, every school day The Cardinal will feature a prominent and historical Black American, living or dead, who has worked toward change, advancement, and/or world peace. Some of them are heroes, and some are unsung heroes, who deserve recognition, and have made a contribution to society.

Barack Obama was born August 4,1961 in Honolulu Hawaii and was the first president born outside the contiguous 48 United States.
Obama was the first African American president of the United States. Obama signed many landmark bills into law during his first two years in the office. The main reforms included the Affordable Care Act, and the 2009 economic stimulus package, which dealt with the economic crash of 2008.

Obama’s legacy is that he became the first African American chief executive on January 20,2009, having embraced the audacious hope of prompting a more inclusive America and providing affordable healthcare for all of its citizens. Eight years later after two terms in the office, Obama could still look back on his presidency with the satisfaction of a landmark of accomplishments achieved despite partisan opposition. His legacy of foreign and domestic achievements appeared precarious with the assumption of the presidency on January 20, 2017.
