NewJeans is a South Korean girl group that was formed under ADOR, a branch of HYBE Corporation. The group consists of five members: Hanni, Minji, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein. The name, NewJeans, refers to the concept that jeans are a timeless fashion piece intended to brand the group as one that is timeless. Their name is a wordplay for the phrase, “new genes,” as well, setting the scene as the new generation of music. Lately, they have been on the rise all over the media for their refreshing, addictive music.

NewJeans first made their debut on July 22, 2022, with their single, “Attention.” It was released early as a surprise in order to gain “attention” for the group and promote their upcoming debut EP of the same name. Although this was a risky move for the group, it ultimately ended in success with the music video gaining over 1.3 million views within a span of 24 hours. Less than six months into their career,, NewJeans has already gained many achievements. Some of the awards that they have won comprise of the Golden Disc Award for Rookie Artist of the Year, Melon Music Award for Best New Artist, and Asia Artist Award for Performance of the Year. In January of 2023, they made history by becoming the fastest K-pop group to enter Billboard’s Global 200, with their growing popularity. Two of their songs, “Ditto” and “OMG” made it to the top ten simultaneously.

So far, NewJeans has incorporated genres such as moombahton, electro-pop, hip-hop, and R&B into the songs that they have released. Their debut extended play (EP) consists of four songs, and my favorite is “Hype Boy.” “What song are you listening to right now?” One of their latest songs, “Ditto” is a song that I have been listening to on repeat. What I love about their music is how it pulls me into wanting to listen to more with its addictive melodies and the boost of energy it gives. I highly recommend checking them out!
