Each school day The Cardinal will feature a prominent and historical person from the LGBTQ+ community, living or dead, who has worked toward change, advancement, and/or world peace. Some of them are heroes, and some are unsung heroes, who deserve recognition, and have made a contribution to society.

Tom Waddell, an American athlete and physician, left an impact to the world through his contributions to sports and gay rights. He is best known as the founder of the Gay Games, an international sporting and cultural event that promotes inclusivity and celebrates the achievements of gay athletes.

Wadell believed that sports could serve as a powerful tool to challenge stereotypes. He did face discrimination due to his sexual orientation, however, but he persevered and went on to establish this worldwide sport event in 1982, which provided a safe and supportive platform for these kinds of athletes to compete and express themselves. Aside from sports, Waddell was an advocate for equality. He aimed to fight this form of prejudice and promote understanding through education and outreach.

His devotion to creating a more inclusive world, where gay individuals could live authentically, continues to inspire others. Tom Waddell’s pioneering efforts in founding the Gay Games and his commitment to gay rights has left a mark on the world. It lets society know the power of sport to nurture unity and acceptance, as well as the importance of making spaces where all people can thrive, no matter their sexual preference.
