In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, every school day The Cardinal will feature a prominent and historical Hispanic American, living or dead, who has worked toward change, advancement, and/or world peace. Some of them are heroes, and some are unsung heroes, who deserve recognition, and have made a contribution to society.

Rebbeca Marie Gomez, also known as Becky G, is a singer, songwriter, and actress. She was born March 2, 1997 and is currently 26 years old.

When she was nine she decided she wanted to pursue a music career. In 2009 she joined a girl group called “G.L.A.M” then later joined a group called “BCG.” She would do commercials and small modeling and acting appearances but she didn’t start to get recognition until 2011 when she did covers of songs. She released her first debut song in 2013 called “Becky from the Block” and it received a lot of good reviews and a lot of people enjoyed it. But it wasn’t until April 23, 2014 when she released “Shower” and this song hit mainstream and went on to enter the top twenty of the Bilboard Hot 100 Chart.

Becky G uses her big following to speak out against inequality and raise awareness about social issues, including Black Lives Matter and Dreamers. She is openly proud to be Hispanic and has become a beacon for Latinos, Mexican-Americans, and for women.

Samantha Cepeda was born on August 12 and is a junior and a member of SJA at Hoover High School. She hopes to be the first in her family to get into a four-year university. In school she’s a very quiet and calm person and due to this she struggles to make friends. Outside of school she enjoys going on walks during the night while listening to music, it brings her peace. She loves doing her makeup and loves going out with her cousins. Although she was born in summer she hates everything about it, she prefers the cold weather. She hopes to come out of her shell this year.
