“On Wednesdays We Wear Pink”

On+Wednesdays+We+Wear+Pink

It was announced on Wednesday, January 31, that the spring musical at Hoover High School will be the high school version of Mean Girls.

According to choir director Mr. Mark Gonzales, his first choice was the musical Six.  But it was not available for high schools on the west coast because a North American tour will be performing during the time that Hoover was going to open their production.

So Mr. Gonzales looked for a musical with a strong female presence in the cast.  There are a number of strong female singers currently in the choir, and maybe out there in the school.  It was the best and funnest choice to go with Mean Girls this year.

“I’m excited and I’m also a little nervous because this is the first big musical we are producing since our last full musical of RENT in 2016,” said Mr. Gonzales.  “I am looking forward to going through this process with our students, because I know at the end of it all, they always come together as a cast and see how important the arts are.”

Mr. Gonzales researched other musicals, and Mean Girls had the right amount of characters with the best vocal ranges.  Currently, the vocal ranges in the musical best match the talent of the potential performers who audition.  According to Mr. Gonzales, Mean Girls was the most popular choice for our student population since the new musical film version was recently released.  Also, the instrumentation required for this musical coincides with the talent that is in the music department.

“I’m so excited about this project!” said band director Mr. Adam Miller.  “I’ve been on this campus for a year and a half, and it is great to do a cross curricular, cross-discipline collaboration project. This also gives the instrumentalists an opportunity to collaborate with the vocal and drama department.”

Open auditions will start on Monday, February 5, after school and will continue until Friday, February 9.  Please fill out the Google form before arriving to audition.  Performers should prepare to sing in the pop rock genre.  You may be asked to sing vocal exercises.  You may bring a musical track or sing acapella.
