Ocean Discovery Institute uses science to empower young people from urban and diverse backgrounds to transform their lives, their community, and ultimately our world.

BAHIA is the beginning step for our Ocean Leaders who will continue on a pathway through high school, college and careers with a series of support services and opportunities. As a result 8 out of 10 of our students will continue on to a 4 year university and 75% of these students have majors in science and conservation.

Ocean Leaders begin their journey with the BAHIA program. This program provides an intensive, research-focused education experience for eligible Hoover students. BAHIA begins in San Diego and continues in Baja California, Mexico. After preparing for this experience in the spring, students will travel 500 miles down the Baja Peninsula to spend five weeks conducting marine science research alongside scientists at a field research station on the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. The students will return to San Diego in August to share their research and experience.

This year we are looking for:

  • 9th and 10th graders with a strong interest in Science and Conservation
  • 11th grade students with a strong interest in Science, Conservation and strong Academic Achievement (3.0 GPA and above)

Important Dates:

  • January 4: Early Decision Applications available in Room E at Library
  • January 22: Early Decision Applications due in drop box in the Library, Room E
  • Feb 1-12: Early Decision Interviews
  • March 28: BAHIA Program begins in San Diego
  • June 25: Students leave for Baja California, Mexico
