Want to become an Ocean Leader?

Isabel Herrara, 2011 Alumni

Ocean Discovery Institute uses science to empower young people from urban and diverse backgrounds to transform their lives, their community, and ultimately our world.

BAHIA is the beginning step for our Ocean Leaders who will continue on a pathway through high school, college and careers with a series of support services and opportunities. As a result 8 out of 10 of our students will continue on to a 4 year university and 75% of these students have majors in science and conservation.

Ocean Leaders begin their journey with the BAHIA program. This program provides an intensive, research-focused education experience for eligible Hoover students. BAHIA begins in San Diego and continues in Baja California, Mexico. After preparing for this experience in the spring, students will travel 500 miles down the Baja Peninsula to spend five weeks conducting marine science research alongside scientists at a field research station on the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. The students will return to San Diego in August to share their research and experience.
