Experiencing the college life

Experiencing+the+college+life

This summer, I will be attending a school program called Ocean Discovery. This program gives us the opportunity to have a “college” dorm experience for a week.

The program is two weeks long, but the first week we will be going to USD to take classes. In the second week we actually get to stay in the dorms. My peers and I will get to stay in the dorms and have a full on experience of how college students live and get to class. I’m nervous about the schedule because I heard that we have to wake up early to take our classes. I think it’s cool because we are getting the actual college experience. I also have the chance to do activities and spend time with my friends. I’m most excited about staying in the dorms and creating memories with my friends because not everyone gets to experience staying in dorms.

I am glad I’m part of the program because they help us with college and really help us start to visualize what we want to do with our future. They also give us opportunities to see colleges and talk to people in different careers. I had the opportunity to go to UC Berkeley through this program. I just know that I will have fun throughout the summer because I will be able to learn new things about college while having a great time with others.

I know that if I don’t keep myself busy throughout the summer I will most likely just stay home so in order to avoid that I decided to distract myself with cool opportunities that will help me later on in the future. I can’t wait for this amazing experience. At times I do think about how long we are going to be staying there and just can’t imagine being away from home for that long. But then I think to myself that it’s a great opportunity because I will get to know how to feel about living in dorms and if I think ist for me or not.

Dhalia Arriaga, Staff Writer

Dhalia Arriaga is a junior in Hoover High. She enjoys writing, and by writing she expresses herself and all the emotions that go on in her head. To Dhalia writing isn’t just words written but it’s words that have a story to it. It has a deeper meaning to her that's why she enjoys writing so much. It brings her peace and comfort. Dhalia’s main goal is to make her parents proud. She wants to make her parents proud because she knows that her parents sacrificed so much for her and her sisters. The thought of her parents going to another country and leaving everything behind to give their kids a better life didn't sit right with her. So she wants to show them that she appreciates everything they’ve done by graduating and proving to them that anything is possible when you set your mind to it. Every tear and feeling of exhaustion will end up being worth it once she graduates and is able to say that she made it through those tough high school years. No matter how hard this journey might get she will always try to keep a positive mindset because at times it gets real and the feeling of giving up gets to her but then again she thinks about her immigrant parents who came here with nothing and have given her everything. Dhalia wants to be able to give them so much back for all the love and support she has received. As you can tell Dhalia is very attached to her family. Family means everything to her and enjoys every second she gets with them.
