The British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac was formed in 1967 by Peter Green. The band’s name came from Green putting together two of the member’s names: Mick Fleetwood and John McVie.
When the band was first formed, they debuted a self-titled album which gained a lot of success in the UK. Between 1968 and 1974 the band released nine albums although they would go through many lineup changes. In 1975, members Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined and the band reached its peak. Members during the band’s best commercial success, the late 1970s to early 1980s, included Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, and Lindsey Buckingham.
Under this lineup, they released another self-titled album which gained massive success and made the band famous worldwide. It reached number one in the U.S. and sold millions. After the release and success, there were many personal conflicts within the band and they decided to channel their emotions into their next album. Fleetwood Mac released Rumors in 1977 which would go on to become one of the best-selling albums of all time. Rumors also won the Grammy for Album of the Year. Two years later Tusk was released and the same year the band received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
After releasing Mirage in 1982 the band decided to take a break. Five years later the most recognized lineup reunited and released Tango in the Night, which went on to become very popular. In 1997 The Dance helped the band reach the top of the charts after ten years of decreased success. The following year Fleetwood Mac was admitted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which included members of previous lineups as well as the members during the 1970s and 80s. In 2022, Christine McVie died from a stroke and a battle with cancer. She was 79 years old and the band decided there was no sense in ever reuniting.
Later on, Mick Fleetwood who served as drummer and leader of Fleetwood Mac established a non-profit charity, The Mick Fleetwood Foundation. The charity’s purpose is to push and fund better music education in schools. Fleetwood Mac is one of my favorite bands because of the emotions they are able to convey in their music and lyrics. Their live performances are always full of passion and energy, making it clear how much they all love music.
