Cell phone usage by students during class time has become rampant. It is not uncommon to see several students openly using or sneaking their phones during instructions.
It seems that many students can’t go to class without their phones. When students do use their phones during class, it’s hardly productive. Students shouldn’t use their phones during class, and while not always effective, students should be required to put their phones away. Although many students would protest against locking their phones up, it would help take away their biggest distraction. Without their phones, there’s not much to do but focus in class. Simply telling students to put their phones away does not really work, as they usually go back on their phones once the teacher walks away.
When comparing students in classes where phones are required to be put away versus classes where they aren’t, there is a big difference. In classes where it was required, students are a lot more likely to be focused and productive. There are higher chances that they will finish their classwork and assignments during the period. On the other hand, in classes where it’s not required, students are a lot less focused and far more distracted. Some students don’t even look at the teacher, with their heads down, looking at their phones for the majority of the period.
Although the majority of students like to have their phones during class, they would be a lot better off without them. Having phones during class tempts students to distract themselves, especially in classes they don’t like. It is not uncommon for students to scroll on their phones when given time in class to complete homework. Unfortunately, it seems that the majority of students can’t regulate their phone usage during school and put down their devices in order to focus.
Teachers should require students to lock or put their phones away during class because it will benefit the students and their ability to focus during school. In order to have productive classes with engaged students, phones need to be locked away.
