Mr. Salgado has been a teacher at Hoover High school for eight years as he started during the 2018-2019 school year and became a part of the LEAD Academy. He remembers his first days when he would teach in the bungalows and taught IM2 during his first year, describing the Hoover community to be welcoming as it continues to be.
A way Mr. Salgado connects with his students is by giving them respect, challenging them, and doing his best to model the importance of discipline, punctuality, and hard work. A good day at school for Mr. Salgado contains a series of joyous and interactive moments with his students, such as those times where students think to themselves; “aha!”, when they begin to understand a challenging math topic. For him, the best thing about being a teacher is that he is able to do something that he loves. Math was his favorite subject when he was in school, so being able to teach it in his own way is the best part about his job. What he hates most about being a teacher is having to grade his students homework.
Prior to teaching, one of Mr. Salgado’s proudest moments was getting accepted into UCSD after working in fast food. It was the first long term goal he accomplished and, in that moment, he felt he was given an opportunity to prove he was worth something. Continuing his goals, an aim that Mr. Salgado hopes to achieve this upcoming year is to improve the pre-calculous curriculum.
He loves San Diego and has been living here his entire life. His favorite place to visit in San Diego is La Jolla because it reminds him of his college days. A couple words he would use to describe himself are calm, curious, and open-minded. During his free time, Mr. Salgado enjoys salsa dancing, playing board games with friends and family, and going on long hikes. It is something that he describes to be a stress relieving activity, allowing you to forget whatever it is that is stressing you out and focus on getting to the top of the mountain. Once completing a hike, it is often easier to reflect on whatever problems someone may have and continue through life peacefully.
