When we think of a big singer that’s Latina, I’m pretty sure we all think about Selena. Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was an American singer, songwriter, spokesperson, businesswoman, model, actress, and fashion designer. She is basically the one who put the Latino community on the map and won a Grammy in 1993. She was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, Texas. She had two siblings, one sister and one brother. She is also the youngest of them all. One of her singles, “Como la Flor”, became one of her most popular signature songs. Then in 1994, she released Amor Prohibido, which became one of the best-selling Latin albums in the United States.

Sadly her career came to an end. She was shot and killed on March 31, 1995 by her own former manager, Yolanda Saldivar. After trying to flee, Yolanda was cornered by the police. She threatened that she was going to kill herself and was convinced to just give herself up. She was convicted of murder. After weeks passed by , George W. Bush, governor of Texas at the time, declared April 16 as Selena Day in Texas. If one thing is for sure is that Selena’s legacy will continue and will go for centuries.
