Family traditions can mean a lot of things. Especially with Thanksgiving because someone’s tradition can be another person’s normal occurrences during the holidays.
My family tradition is everyone getting together. It’s rare for the entire family to all come together. I feel as if that’s important because family means a lot to me and what also means a lot is getting to know the rest. During Thanksgiving it’s not only about the food but it’s learning about the rest of my family heritage and history. This is what I enjoy learning during the get-together.
This was years ago. Those memories of what I learned and what I have heard have been tainted. These past years have been only my family and my cousins. It’s been getting smaller and smaller each year until it was just us. I remember a time when Thanksgiving was something to look forward to but now the family tradition of understanding and learning about our other family is kinda fading. During those years I still ask questions about the family but, now it’s a small answer that doesn’t really tell me much about them. So instead, the family tradition has just been getting together with the family we have and spending valuable time with them.
I want to break this kind of tradition with something new. Since I’m getting older I have made new friends. I am changing my perspective on Thanksgiving and what I can now view as a tradition. This year instead of having Thanksgiving just with my family, I’m adding the best people in my life into it. My friends. It’s the first time ever doing something like this and hopefully can lift the spirit of Thanksgiving into my family.
I would like to reinvent my family tradition by doing something different instead of having it be the same each and every year. With the family getting smaller and smaller each and every year, it’s time to create new traditions.
