For Mr. Myers, an ELD teacher at our school, the classroom is more than just a place of study, it is a launchpad for the future.
While many know him for his constant smile and the Baby Yoda decor that fills his room, his path to teaching was driven by a deep-seated desire to give back. After years of running his own business, Mr. Myers realized his true calling wasn’t in the commercial world, but in mentorship. Inspired by a teacher from his own past who helped him immensely, he transitioned into education to ensure his students have the same support system he once relied on.
The most vital part of Mr. Myers’ mission is watching the transformation of his students. He notes that while many arrive feeling lost or uncertain, seeing them cross the stage at graduation is his ultimate reward. His favorite memories are rooted in these moments of success, especially when students who once believed they would never graduate defy their own expectations.
For him, seeing them move on to stable jobs and successful lives is the greatest “thank you” he could receive. Interestingly, Mr. Myers brings a unique perspective to the hallways. His students are often shocked to learn that he owned and operated a bar for many years before entering the classroom. This professional background informs his “crazy and fun” teaching style, proving that life experiences can take you in unexpected directions. Despite the stark difference between the hospitality industry and ELD instruction, his core motivation remains the same: connecting with people. On difficult days, it is the simple act of laughing with his students that keeps him motivated and energized.
When it comes to advice, Mr. Myers doesn’t hold back, but one guiding principle stands above the rest: “There is no tomorrow; do it today.” This sense of urgency and dedication is clear in every aspect of his day. Whether he is fueling up with his morning coffee or discussing History, the subject he would be teaching if he weren’t in the ELD department, his passion is impossible to miss.
As an early bird who is truly devoted to his craft, Mr. Myers has built a classroom environment that is as vibrant and welcoming as it is beautiful. It only takes a moment in his presence to see that he truly loves what he does, and more importantly, he truly loves his students.
